Agents can edit Office files, and look at the result

OfficeCLI lets a coding agent read and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files without Office installed.

It's iOfficeAI/OfficeCLI, Apache 2.0, about 32k stars, created in March. One self-contained binary handles .docx, .xlsx and .pptx. The detail I like is the render step: it turns a document into HTML or PNG, so the agent can look at what it made, spot the broken slide and fix it. That render, look, fix loop is what most document automation skips.

Installing is where I'd slow down. The README offers a curl to bash script, brew, or npm. Running officecli install copies the binary to your PATH and installs its skill into every coding agent it detects. The README names Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf and GitHub Copilot, among others. So it writes into your agent setup, and the script deserves a read first.

The README also calls it the world's first and best Office suite for agents. I'd treat that as marketing and try it on a document you can afford to break.

What's the most tedious office file you'd hand to an agent first?
